Serbia, officially the Republic of Serbia, is a sovereign state situated at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe in the southern Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. Serbia numbers around 7 million residentes. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in southeastern Europe.
The official language is Serbian, native to 88% of the population. Serbian is the only European language with active digraphia, using both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.
Serbia is landlocked, but as a Danube country it is connected to distant seas and oceans.
The cultural and historical heritage of Serbia begins with prehistoric archaeological sites and its legacy from classical antiquity.
Today, Serbia is a modern, democratic European country, on the path to membership of the European Union.
According to Tourist organization of Serbia, the most-visited tourist destinations are the cities of Belgrade and Novi Sad, the mountains of Kopaonik and Zlatibor and the spa towns of Vrnjačka Banja and Sokobanja.
